Alternative Giving 101

Here are some Alternative gift giving ideas I think are just great!

  • Heifer Project International (HPI) Choose a meaningful gift to give a loved one and help children and families around the world receive training and animal gifts that help them become self-reliant. See their Gift Catalog!

  • Church World Service (CWS) Give helpful gifts like blankets, food packages, oral re-hydration kits, or even literacy! Their Gift Catalog is here.

  • Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) I have first hand experience with this organization. Last May I went to New Orleans with a group from my church. PDA provided our base camp which included tents, cots, kitchen and dining tents, food, showers, and even a washing machine. They also provided all the tools and equipment we needed to gut several houses while we were there. The work there is ongoing and PDA will be in that area for at least 5 years. Thank you PDA!

  • My Friend Sue's Great Idea (MFSGI) My friend Sue's parents always request that their gift be a donation to charity. This year Sue had a great idea. She took her two kids to the grocery store, gave them each a cart, and told them how much money they could spend. They had a BLAST filling their carts with food for the Omaha Food Bank. When they were done, she took a picture of their smiling faces and their full carts. What a great gift for her parents! Because the grocery store is working with a local t.v. station, they could just leave their gift there to be delivered directly to the food bank. Great idea, Sue!

Merry, Merry Christmas! Love, Momster

My parents and aunt and uncle gave to HPI last year, and now it has become a whole family thing! It's much better than exchanging gifts and it feels good to be helping people.
